Jamboree Etiquette

Participating in a jam requires a blend of respect, communication, and musical understanding. Here are some key etiquette guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Respect the Space.  Keep the area tidy and respect the venue’s rules.

  • Listen Actively.  Pay attention to other musicians and the overall sound.

  • Be aware of dynamics and adjust your playing accordingly.

  • Take Turns.  Allow each musician a chance to take a solo or lead.

  • Communicate when you want to step in or pass the lead.

  • Know the Songs.  Familiarize yourself with commonly played songs.  Be open to learning from others.

  • Support Others.  Encourage fellow musicians by complementing their playing.

  • Provide a solid rhythm and foundation for soloists.

  • Be Mindful of Volume. Keep your volume at a level that allows others to be heard.

  • Use dynamics to enhance the performance rather than overpower it.

  • Keep It Fun. Enjoy the music and the camaraderie of fellow musicians.

  • Stay positive and supportive throughout the jam.

  • Be Open to Feedback.  Accept constructive criticism gracefully.

  • Offer feedback to others in a respectful manner.

  • Know When to Step Back.  If you feel overwhelmed or out of your depth, it’s okay to take a step back.

  • Support the jam by listening and learning.
